Meet Dr. Willanie Bouwer

I’m Dr. Willanie Bouwer, a dentist and the owner of my own dental practice. Dentistry has been a meaningful part of my life for many years, and my journey into healthcare began long before I became a dentist.

As a childhood cancer survivor, I spent a significant part of my early life in hospitals and clinical environments. My mother was a nurse, so healthcare was also a familiar part of my childhood. From a young age, I knew that I wanted to work in healthcare and, in some way, serve my community by helping people.

Dentistry ultimately felt like the perfect fit for me. It allowed me to combine the part of me that wanted to be a doctor and care for people with my creative side. Dentistry is both a science and an art, and I have always loved that combination.

I obtained my Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of the Western Cape in 2013. I have been consulting with patients since 2010 and spent five years working as a locum dentist at various practices. Those years gave me the opportunity to gain experience in different practice environments and, perhaps more importantly, helped me develop a clear understanding of the kind of dentist and practice I wanted to build.

During my time as a locum, I sometimes witnessed doctors and dentists being placed under pressure by business interests to make treatment decisions that were not necessarily in the best interests of their patients. As someone who believes that healthcare should always put the patient first, this created a significant moral dilemma for me.

Eventually, I decided that the best way for me to practise dentistry according to my own values was to build a practice of my own.

My goal was never simply to own a dental practice. I wanted to create a practice where I could provide honest, ethical and patient-centred care without allowing financial incentives to determine what treatment a patient receives.

I believe that good dentistry should be accessible to as many people as possible. That is why I have made affordability and transparency important principles of my practice. I want my patients to understand their treatment options, know what their treatment will cost, and feel that the recommendations I make are based on what is genuinely best for their oral health — not on what is most profitable.

For me, being a dentist is about much more than fixing teeth. It is about building trust, helping people feel comfortable in the dental chair, and being someone my patients can rely on to give them honest advice.

After all these years, I am still grateful that I found a profession that allows me to combine my love of healthcare, my creativity and, most importantly, my desire to serve people.
